Spelling:
Spelling is a real focus at this point in the year in Year 2. Please support your child at home by helping them to practise the spelling rules listed below.
Lesson 1: When to use oo and u-e to spell the long /oo/ sound
oo and u-e both come in the middle of words

Sometimes ui or u can make the long /oo/ sound.
This is rare. We just have to learn these words.
Lesson 2: When to use ue and ew to spell the long /oo/ sound
Both ue and ew usually come at the end of words.
argue
rescue
queue
stew
threw
blew

Lesson 3: Using the short /e/ sound spelt ea - like in bread and head

breath feather heavy weather spread thread head leather
Writing
We will write our Hey Diddle Diddle stories using our story maps from last week. We will use the following story structure:
Introduce setting and characters
Write about the main events of the story
Plan and write a resolution
Reading
We will be continuing with our class text - Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World

This week we continuing with our unit on Position and Direction and then carrying out assessment of our Fractions unit and Position and Direction.
-Using the language left, right, forwards and backwards to give directions to someone.
-Using our fractions knowledge to describe turns as: ‘quarter turn’, ‘half turn’, ‘three-quarter turn’ and ‘full turn’ and describe whether the turns are in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction.
-To combine the language of movement and turns learnt (above) to give multi step directions. E.g. go forward 3 squares, quarter turn anti-clockwise, go forwards 2 squares.
To understand how to create shape patterns using turns

Supporting at home
You can support your child by helping them to identity and use ‘left’ and ‘right’ in everyday situations. Giving directions when out and about, laying the table (knowing the knife goes on the right) etc
