    English

    Spelling:
Spelling is a real focus at this point in the year in Year 2. Please support your child at home by helping them to practise the spelling rules listed below.

Lesson 1: irregular plurals (from last week - missed due to school closure)
    Rules:
    - most of the time when making plurals you just add -s
    - if a word ends in x, ch, sh and ss, you need to add -es
    - if a word ends in f or fe, you need to change the ending to -ve
    - sometimes singular and plural words are the same like: one sheep, many sheep
    - sometimes singular words have to change entirely to become plurals like: person becomes people, mouse becomes mice

Lesson 2: Making plurals when the root word ends in -y. (from last week - missed due to school closure)
    Eg. ray → rays
    play → plays
    boy → boys

RULE: If the root word ends in a consonant and then a y, we have to drop the ‘y’ and add ‘ies’.
    So…
    baby → babies
    teddy → teddies
    fairy → fairies

    Writing
We will begin a new unit of ‘Character Descriptions’ with a focus on immersing ourselves in the story and thinking of amazing adjectives and noun phrases.

    Reading
We will be starting to read our new class text Fantastic Mr Fox (we did not start last week due to school closures)

    Maths

The maths is has been carried forward from last week due to our music event and school closure.

Sycamore Class are finishing their Time unit.

    Maple class are starting Time:
-To tell o’clock and half past times (recap of Year 1)
-To tell quarter past and quarter to times (main focus)

    Supporting at home
Both classes would benefit from having an analogue clock around the home. For Maple Class practising telling o’clock and half past times ahead of our unit to ensure they are secure before we move on would help. For Sycamore reinforcing the times we are learning in class would be helpful.

The language of past (not to be confused with ‘past’ in history!) and to can be confusing for children so please reinforce that they mean…
