Wider curriculum (DT - water play):
Prior learning: This term, we have been learning about boats. The children have learnt about waterproof materials and floating and sinking.
Future learning: Next week, we will invite the children to share their findings with the class, so please take some photos and put them on Tapestry. At school in the week commencing 6th July children will design a boat to make and in the week commencing 13th July, they will make the boat.
Learning objective: To investigate how the shape and structure of containers affects the way they move.
You will need: A range of containers (for example: ice cream containers, small pots or bowls, tin foil boats, flat trays, cardboard boxes, Tupperware or containers – try to choose things that will float or move in different ways)
Fill a bath, sink, paddling pool or water tray with water.
Ask your child to come and explore the different containers through play to investigate how the shape and structure of the containers affects the way they move in water. Encourage them to think about:
– if the container is waterproof.
– if it floats well.
– if it is able to carry cargo or passengers (e.g. small world figures).
– which floats the best.
– if they are able to move smoothly or whether they tip over.
